Consoles: The Next Generation
With E3 over, the buzz about the next generation consoles from all the usual suspects is relenting to hard information.
Today Ars Technica posted an inside look at the XBox 360. I find this sort of information incredibly interesting, as I like to pretend I am smarter than I really am. n-way associative caches aren’t really something I know a damned thing about. It was an interesting read and inspired me to make something complicated. Film at eleven. Each of the the 3 cores in the XBox’s processor is also SMT. This means that 6 threads can execute simultaneously on this bad boy. On a side note, IBM is the brains behind this processor. The are also involved in the PS3 ‘Cell’ processor and designed the Nintendo ‘Gekko’ for the Gamecube. Go IBM!
I found an interesting story at Bit-Tech talking about how the NVIDIA (Really, what’s the deal with the fucking capital letters? Are you too good for traditional mixed case?) powered GPU for the Playstation 3 is still in development. It’s not even taped out yet! That means all those demos we saw from E3 were bullshit. Thanks.
UPDATE: One other thing, to all the people that flamed me for suggesting nearly 10 years ago that multi-core processors would be a good idea are welcome to send their apologies and begin making reservations to kiss my ass. :)
