My son has a 2005 S40 T5 and continues to have starting problems. Volvo has replaced the starter and suggested using lower octane gas. The problem persists; it goes back in tomorrow.

The Volvo S40 T5 got has new valves after 10 days in the shop. The very next morning the same starting problem appeared. I know they are trying their best but obviously have no idea.

I had the same problem starting my Volvo S40 T5 FWD 2005 every morning; I had to crank at least twice to start the car, the first crank always lead to choking and eventually the engine stopped.

I brought it back to the dealership for at least 5 times, they cleaned the air mass sensor unit, changed the spark plugs, injectors and nothing worked. Finally, they figured it out it was the engine software problem. The first software upgrade fixed the problem but lead to increase in fuel consumption and decrease in horsepower.

I referred this problem to volvo, and they swap back to the previous software. I drove it for a while with the starting problem until another problem hit. It’s the suspension that is making a noise. It took them 3 weeks to find out it was the spring that was defective. When I got back my car, the service person told me there’s a new software to fix the starting problem without sacrificing fuel consumption and power.

It’s been a week now I have been driving with this new software, but this software does not perform like the service person have promised. Just for your reference, with the original software; my car averaged 9.7L/100km. And with the upgraded software; my car averaged 10.4L/100km, under similiar driving conditions. Please let me know if there’s any cure to this problem without sacrificing the fuel consumption and power output.

I’ve still not gotten any software fix for my car. They just gave me a new car and it’s only had the problem once.
