The 'Ubersexual' Male
Thursday, October 27, 2005 at 1:26PM UPDATE: Emily called this an evolution of metrosexual. I disagree. Metro has a certain stigma that I don't like...
My friend Kate sent me an interesting article explaining a new guy stereotype: Ubersexual.
She sent me this after having read a few posts here and having a few outside discussions. She said that she and some of her friends wished they had known about this type of guy earlier so they could have targeted their searches better.
The ubersexual embraces all the things we associate with being a man without adhering to 'negative' stereotypes that are often applied. This apparently means that the guy can be into both sports and politics, beer and wine, emotion and confidence or whathaveyou. Some examples of 'top ubersexuals' from advertising agency JWT's take on the subject are: Jon Stewart, Guy Ritchie, and Pierce Brosnan. Not bad company, if you ask me.
I'm not really into stereotypes, as I think they allow us to pigeon-hole people without knowing them. I do understand why we have them however, so I don't complain. Kate commented that this might be the label for me. The press release I linked above has some further explanation of the idea. I think it's a very positive label to give someone. Who wouldn't want to be considered confident, well-informed, intelligent, and thoughtful? It also doesn't manifest any of the stigma of being overly into material things (although it references an 'appreciation' of the finer things).
I wasn't waiting for a label for myself and I don't intend to go around trumpeting on my categorization. I am mildly excited by the fact that companies have a demographic for guys like me though. It makes it easier for them to target their products or services. I know a couple other guys that could be labeled this way. I could see how a woman would be into a guy with the qualities described. We'd all make great catches! Some appreciate their music and others their cars or clothes. The common principle I see is that their appreciations for these things are secondary to their confidence and passion in general.
When I read the description, one person came to mind: Sean Connery. Who wouldn't want to be him? Besides being James freaking Bond he was in Entrapment with Catherine Zeta Jones. The training for the lasers! Yowza!
