After consulting with a former coworker, I got most of my MVC woes straightened out and now have a working, hierarchical MVC setup.
We see here an example of two events occuring. The first is handled by it's immediate controller. The second is handled by the parent. This is a horribly boring thing to post about, but it makes moving forward much easier.
