For Real
Monday, October 30, 2006 at 7:16PM It wasn't that long ago that I woke up, took stock of my life and said What Now? I love my job, have great friends, and have all the things that, 10 years ago, I said I wanted to have. There are a few exceptions to that but nothing I could rush. So I started to think about what I could do to bring new challenges I could face outside of my normal stuff (life, love, and work).
Music.
So I tapped my friends for some pointers. The yield has been a few weeks of messing with audio software and hardware. The yield is 6.8 minutes of slightly rushed basslines, a few odd choices and a lot of doubt.
I don't intend to ever do anything with my music. But it's a fun hobby and it changes your perspective. Music you didn't like before suddenly becomes interesting and stuff you loved suddenly sounds different.
So it is with a mix of pride and fear that I release For Real to the world. My freshman collection of beats.
- So Amazing
The bass line is too tight. The strings are wonderful. This joint eases you into my world.
- Speak Up If You Get It
The horns give me a vicious lean. I was listening to this while making dinner tonight and the kick and horn combo had me bobbing and weaving.
- A Buck Short Of 10
The closest thing to a structured song. I spent a long time on the bass (which hits nasty in the right stereo). The staccato violin is a hip-hop staple and I'm quite find of the way it sounds with the horns and drums in the 'chorus'.
- Boom Bap
Not the strongest of the bunch. I love the way it breaks down, but then it gets silly.
- Dirty Grease 2
Barely made the cut. I spent a long time trying get the synth bassline and the piano to play nice, especially with the long synth not. Mission failed.
- And That Isn't All
What album is complete without Shinoda-esque ending track? Whipped up in an hour when I got home, because this sumbitch needed a strong finish.
