Kanye and Symbolic Drums
With Jaxn gone I’ve reverted to headphones at the office. I actually prefer a good set of headphones to a mediocre set of speakers. By good I mean circumaural. Anyway, I prefer headphones because you can pick up a lot of nuances that you miss otherwise. Today’s example are the drums in Hey Mama from Kanye West’s Late Registration. We start off with a simple bass drum and hi-hat combo. After the song gets moving we get a very metallic rhythm that is overshadowed by the existing drums. When I caught it I backed up and listened to it again from the beginning and decided that this was a symbolic touch by my favorite producer. These drums sound a lot like when you used to bang on pots as a kid. That probably irritated the hell out of many mothers in the world. I suppose this could be a way to show it was worth tolerating for at least one child.
