Get To Know Me

Lots of blogs have a ‘100 things about me’ list, or something like that. An email I got this morning motivated me to write something like that.

  1. I’m a morning person.
  2. My favorite time of day is early afternoon, right around lunch time. I like the idea of having accomplished something in the morning and having the whole day to look forward to.
  3. I work well under pressure. Sometimes I need it to be motivated.
  4. I am overly indecisive.
  5. I am a hopeless romantic.
  6. I love pasta with chicken and basil pesto sauce.
  7. My favorite type of music is hip-hop, but jazz and drum-and-bass are catching up.
  8. I probably have more music than you.
  9. I am a perfectionist. I often don’t attempt things that I don’t think I can accomplish to my liking.
  10. I am smart, but due to the very smart people I am acquainted with I have a rather poor view of my own intelligence.
  11. Despite the previous fact, I still think I’m smarter than everyone.
  12. I always have a plan. For everything.
  13. I am very analytical and I analyze everything. Especially women.
  14. I often wish I wasn’t so analytical and compassionate. It would be nice to not care about other people’s feelings sometimes because protecting others sometimes prevents me from being happy.
  15. All of these analyticalnesses and plan makings stem from the underlying fact that I am afraid to be wrong.
  16. I have no problem admitting that I am wrong, I just hate it when it happens.
  17. I love attention.
  18. I was born in Gallatin, Tennessee.
  19. I have a budget and I always plan my expenditures but I rarely manage to stick to them.
  20. I save all my receipts.
  21. I am organized and methodical. I keep everything filed.
  22. I say that I am easy to please, but I actually have very high expectations of people.
  23. People usually disappoint me. I expect the best all the time from them.
  24. I wish that I knew more. I am a sponge for information. I want to know the answer to everything.
  25. I always win Trivial Pursuit.
  26. It frustates the hell out of me when people don’t attempt to try and see things my way.
  27. Not being listened to also drives me crazy. People that ignore me hurt my feelings pretty bad. I’m not sure where that comes from.
  28. A girlfriend calling me ‘baby’ causes me to melt.
  29. I like nicknames. I always wanted one.
  30. I always hated being so skinny and bony. I gained 50lbs after high school and am very proud of how I’ve shaped up since I got divorced.
  31. I don’t believe in divorce. Getting divorced was the most painful thing I’ve ever done. I hate failing.
  32. I am obsessed with shoes.
  33. I have lots of ideas for how to decorate my house, I’m just too lazy to do it.
  34. I despise racism and bigotry with a passion.
  35. I’m pro-choice but I am personally opposed to abortion. I just believe that people shouldn’t tell others what to do.
  36. Politics: I’m independent. I consider myself to be a member of the Sane Party.
  37. I left my bachelor party right after it started due to a fight with my then-fiance and I still feel horrible that I did that to my friends.
  38. I am into military hardware. I can name weapon systems at a glance and rattle off all kinds of facts. I primarily know US stuff, but I know some foreign stuff.
  39. I am very appreciative of the things I have and I take good care of them. I always said that when I could afford to buy the things I wanted (say, my car) I would take care of them because I remember what it’s like to not have the things I want.
  40. I love video games because they remind me of the imagination I used to have. I get lost in them.
  41. I am a geek.
  42. I love british gangster movies.
  43. I have a tendency to ‘mispell’ words in the british way, i.e. colour, favour, grey
  44. I am a good speller.
  45. I love words. I have recently become fascinated by etymology.
  46. I love to read.
  47. I was in the gifted program in school, but I never ever studied a single day in school. I wish I had done better on the ACT.
  48. I used to be paralyzingly shy, but could quickly become acclimated and comfortable. I retain some of my shyness these days, but not as much.
  49. I almost never tell my daughter to do something ‘because I said so’. I always give her a reason and I try hard to make sure she always understands.
  50. Being a ’single-father’ every other weekend is emotionally straining and being without my daughter for long spans of time is very difficult. I’m afraid of losing her.
  51. I learned to voice my opinion and not take people’s shit sometime in the last year. I’m still learning.
  52. I have opinions on everything. I could probably spend hours discussing my ideas on practically anything you can imagine. This is in direct contrast to my indecisiveness, but I’ve already pointed out why I work this way.
  53. I talk too fucking much.
  54. I don’t talk enough about what I should be talking about.
  55. I love being in love.
  56. I’m tall.
  57. I hate being scared. I don’t like haunted houses or anything of that nature.
  58. I often get so engrossed in things that I get easily startled. I even do this when I’m walking.
  59. I talk to myself. A lot.
  60. I only have two real life goals left: find something to do that makes a mark (probably technology) and find someone to share it all with.
  61. I used to be scared of alcohol because my father is an alcoholic. These days I am not scared of it, but I am very wary.
  62. I don’t talk to my father for the above reason. I have no issues (that I am aware of) with him, I just refuse to waste time on someone who so carelessly chose a vice over me.
  63. My feelings about my father are probably why I’m so scared of losing my daughter.
  64. I am very respectful of women. I open doors and all that gentleman shit. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t occasionally forget, but I always try and show them respect.
  65. I’m not into ‘traditional’ gender roles. I consider a wife to be an equal investor in a common venture. Neither party has any more power than the other.
  66. I wash, clean and cook. I enjoy doing all of them.
  67. I don’t care much for television. I really like the History Channel.
  68. I am almost never in a bad mood.
  69. I can always laugh, even when I’m angry.
  70. I can’t get a tan for shit.
  71. I always try and learn the words to songs because I feel obligated to try and understand what the artist is trying to say.
  72. 311 is my favorite band.
  73. I hate getting haircuts.
  74. I can’t grow facial hair for shit.
  75. I have never cheated on anyone.
  76. My favorite color is green.
  77. I can’t stand sleeping in socks.
  78. I like girls with long hair, but I have no aversion to those with short hair. For some reason I love the way that girls can switch to have their hair up or down.
  79. I have a thing for girls in skirts.
  80. I like pink on girls.
  81. One of the first things I look at on a girl (after all the physical stuff) is shoes. I do NOT however, give a damn about a girls feet. My feet are painfully ticklish. I will kick the shit out of you.
  82. I want to attend one of those crazy driving schools where they teach you how to drive race cars and shit.
  83. I cuss a lot, but I have the ability to turn it off when necessary.
  84. Back to girls, I like a girl that can cuss.
  85. I love Sun-Drop.
  86. My favorite liquor is tequila. I cannot stand whiskey.
  87. I don’t like to drink if I’m not with people I trust.
  88. I have a close clique of friends that I love like brothers: Mike, Luke, Dallas, and Abram. At various times I’ve lost touch with them. Abram is the only one I don’t see regularly, and Dallas and I don’t see each other much.
  89. I put girls before friends in the past. I won’t do that again.
  90. My brother and I get along great. We are very, very alike.
  91. I can’t stand the idea of being addicted to anything.
  92. I almost never get sick.
  93. I am slowly coming to the conclusion there there is a slim chance I won’t rule the world.
  94. I am not a jealous person.
  95. I have a tendency to say exactly what I feel, despite the ramifications.
  96. Jackson probably knows more about me than anyone I know. He and I became friends at a time in my life when I was learning how to be me.
  97. I have horrible short-term memory.
  98. I have horrible long-term memory.
  99. I am terrible with names.
  100. I suck at math.
  101. I stopped going to college because the community college I went to had a terrible Comp-Sci program and I even taught a chapter in one of the programming classes. Mike and I would go to the first class and not go back again until the last one. We always passed. It seemed like a waste of money.
  102. My favorite flavor of ice cream is vanilla.
  103. Pizza is my favorite food. I always eat the pepperonis off a piece of pizza before I eat the piece.
  104. I don’t get starstruck. I have no real desire to meet any famous people, aside from the ones that I respect due to their work.
  105. I want to work for Apple.
  106. I like doing my taxes.
  107. My favorite album is ‘From Chaos’ by 311. That whole album is effectively my favorite song. Amber, Uncalm, and Champagne are probably the best.
  108. My favorite movies are The Usual Suspects and Snatch.
  109. I am very close to my mom. She has been there for me any time I’ve ever needed her. She’s the best mom ever.
  110. I think you can tell a lot about a man by how he treats his mother.
  111. I don’t like having things hanging over me. I like to have a clear, open agenda. A good example are weekends with my daughter, I get anxious when they get close and I often find myself eyeing the clock throughout the weekend. 5 minutes after she’s gone I wonder where the time went.
  112. I think that the anticipation of doing something is often better than the actual act. Sometimes.
  113. I can’t pee in front of someone. I don’t mean I can’t pee at a urinal in an occupied bathroom, I mean even when I was married I couldn’t pee with my then-wife in the same room.
  114. I am not afraid of shots.
  115. I am very proud of how I’ve managed my life up to this point. I am proud of my career especially.
  116. I have a strong work ethic and I appreciate the flexibility my job offers.
  117. I am pretty much always on time, if not early.
  118. I like to get to work early so I can leave early.
  119. I’m not all that into sports. I really like watching playoffs and championships, where the games mean a lot. I have some preferred teams but I don’t get bent out of shape when they lose.
  120. Despite the previous statement, I am a big fan of Alabama. ROLL TIDE!
  121. I do not care for Tennessee. I like any team that beats them.
  122. I’m not really an animal person. I love my dog but if something happened to her I wouldn’t get another one.
  123. I am into cars. I’m not a mechanic. I let the dealership do my oil changes. (I bring my own oil and they do it for free) I do, however, understand and appreciate the internal combustion engine and I probably know a hair more about how a car works than your average joe.
  124. I have always wanted a Lexus GS but I think my next object of desire will be a BMW M3 Coupe. UPDATE: The GS has grown into a bit too much car for me. Solution? I am now the proud owner of a 2007 Lexus IS 250. I would’ve preferred the 350 but the extra horsepower wasn’t enough to convince me to throw down nearly 10Gs more. C’est la vie.
  125. I let people in when in traffic. Sometimes. If you drive like an asshole I will block you. People that can’t drive make me mad.
  126. I love to drive.
  127. I need things clearly defined. I don’t deal well with abiguities or subtlety. Moral: Don’t hint at me, tell me.
  128. Despite my tendency to plan I enjoy being spontaneous.
  129. I like to run off for the weekend with a girlfriend (when I have one). I like to pack up Friday night and drive somewhere I’ve not been and stay there for the weekend.
  130. I hate messing with the thermostat. I set it once and I deal with it. If I am consistently hot or cold I will adjust it, but I leave it alone. It’s cheaper this way.
  131. I don’t like a lot of light. The lights in my house are pretty much always off. I work in the dark. I turn lights off when I leave a room.
  132. I read before I go to sleep. I don’t use fans or noise generators or anything. I occasionally turn on music.
  133. I don’t snooze when the alarm goes off, I get the hell out of bed. If I was going to ’snooze’ I would just get up later.
  134. I have a tatoo on my left arm. It’s a stylized ‘g’ with a small drop of blood coming off the g’s tail. The g symbolizes me and the blood symbolizes the hard times I’ve been through. I got it to remind myself to never make the same mistake twice. It works on rare occasions. I forget I have it most of the time and occasionally remember it when I see it in the mirror. It means a lot to me.
  135. I’ve been on the Internet since mid-90’s. My nickname has always been ‘gphat’ online.
  136. Search for gphat, Cory Watson or Cory G Watson. There’s a lot there.
  137. I was a writer for an online magazine for a bit. I didn’t really enjoy it.
  138. I tend to analyze things I do and say. I have a tendency to do something then analyze it. After completing the analysis I immediately want to go back and do it again. Almost like the first one was practice. This usually doesn’t work well.
  139. On a few rare occasions I’ve been told I can sing certain songs well. I love to sing and I do it all the time, but I’m pretty sure it’s a trick of the ear. I have no faith in my ability to sing. In fact, I think I’m terrible.
  140. I’d like to play the drums. I think I have decent rhythm.

This was great. I’ve learned more about you in 5 mins. that I’ve learned all year. That’s why I like these lists so much.

I like the inner Cory, and would like to know more about him :)

At least you didn’t say anything bad about me. And you left off one: Your mother loves you and is fascinated by you every day.

“91. My brother and I get along great. We are very, very alike.”

Indeed we are. I found myself saying “heheh, me too.” to just about every-damn-thing. I wonder how we became so similar when we didn’t really hang out much until the last few years…

I’m going to go out on a limb and proffer that it could have something to do with us coming from the same damned DNA. ;)

Nathan Exposed / January 29th, 2006, 1:27 pm / #

[...] Nathan has decided that I am what every woman wants. I’m not going to argue with him, because I agree that I’m a pretty damned good staight guy. I will, however, take slight offense that he only selected the sappiest parts of my Get To Know Me post. I suppose this is understandable when you take his target audience into consideration. [...]

One Mo’ Gin : Cory Watson » The Perfect ‘Straight’ Guy / January 29th, 2006, 2:06 pm / #

[...] I mentioned in my Get To Know Me post that I am humbled by the people around me. I work with some smart guys and have worked with some others. I’ve had some great great bosses. (Don’t get offended if you aren’t linked. I only know so many hackers and only so many of them have blogs) All of these people constantly drive me to be smarter, faster, and more elegant. They feel the same pressures. This culture forces me understand my place in the world. So what if I’ve done some cool stuff? There are so many smart people that I interact with on daily basis — from the hackers in #catalyst to the guys I work with — that I am constantly reminded that I am merely a cog in the machine of Open Source. This doesn’t mean I’m not smart or special, but it does mean that I need to remember there is always someone smarter. This is a reason to work harder, not an excuse to be lazy. [...]
