A Fruity Conundrum

I made some noise a few weeks back about switching to my AlBook full time. This did not come to pass. The nifty examples of a Powerbook mounted on a stand beside a big monitor are not reasonable. The connectors being on the side of the computer prevent any attempts to get the lid lined up properly with an external display.

Last night I was perusing the Apple site, irritated that the two candidates for me to use in a real switch (the mini and the Powermac) are still mired in the G5 doldrums. Why should I buy a new Mac if it’s got a processor that’s going the way of the dodo? I’ve heard rumors that Powermacs are scheduled for Q4 of this year. The Mini is worse, because it’s small size and limited upgrade options push me to get the fastest one I can buy. The rumor mill is much more exciting here, as Intel Minis always seem to be just around the corner. So the Mini seem’s like a good option, right? Small, cheap, and more immediately available!

Enter the iMac. Did you know you can attach an external display? This is bad. The price is right, merely $1699 for the 2.0Ghz w/250GB, Superdrive, Wireless and Bluetooth. The external display is the real kicker for me, as I have a 20.1″ Viewsonic on my desk. I can also rid myself of the rat’s nest of cables that run to the floor. The final straw is that Quicken 2006 ships on the damned thing. It’s as if they were reading my mind.

So what’s stopping me? A few small details. One being that my speakers are 5.1 analog. The iMac has optical outputs, but no analog. This can be fixed when Griffin starts shipping the FireWave. This will also push back my pool table plan. I think I’m ok with that.

UPDATE: CompUSA is also having a week-long 18-month no interest deal. I just happen be a cardholder there with only a small balance (that is also accruing no interest).

UPDATE: Nevermind. Apple event next Tuesday. (Thanks Jaxn)
