Marcus recently said some things about languages that I agree with whole heartedly: Pick your weapon and go to town!

It’s the tools that make languages useful. Rails is always an example because it’s Ruby’s killer app. The tools don’t make the language, but they certainly draw moths to the flame.

So here’s to linguistic polygamy!

I will, however, disagree with his labeling PHP the Prom Queen. Here’s my prom-date language breakdown:

• Java - The Prom Queen. Everyone hates her but for some reason we can’t seem to vote her off. Secretly addicted to coke and has an eating disorder.
• Ruby - The super-hot girl that is new in school. She’s sweet and caring but the jury is still out on whether or not she puts out.
• PHP - The decent looking girl that everyone knows will put out. Available for use in every backseat, hotel, or alley in the area.
• .Net - Mediocre girl who’s father paid huge amounts of money for a limo and an amazing dress, but no one will go with her.
• Perl - The ugly girl that noone wants to take, but that always finds a date. Manages to find a way to participate in the organization of any event.
• Python - The quiet girl that everyone forgets about; makes you wonder if what they say about the quiet ones is true…
• C/C++ - The older woman. Mysterious to many of the younger kids but is guaranteed to know all the tricks.
• Javascript - The freshman that keeps sneaking in and learning way more than they should.
• Lisp - The hot foreign exchange student that rumors say knows how to do some pretty kinky things.
• Cobol and Fortran - Chaperones in attendance to make sure no one has any fun.
