Prestidigitation

Despite Brent’s attempt to lull us into believing that NetNewsWire will erupt from the doldrums and rescue us RSS-loving-Core-Duo-wielding users I’ve been itching to play with a new aggregator. Enter endo. It’s a bit different but it allowed me to import all my feeds (something NewsFire can’t seem to grasp) so I’ll play with it for a few days. It’s noticeably snappier than NNW and has some type of plugin capability that may prove useful later.

One interesting tidbit is endo’s use of color. A quick screenshot will help to illustrate it:

It uses a color to represent each feed so that you can group them visually. I’ve seen this before and was not impressed because who has the time to pick a different color for each feed? The author does. endo looks at the favicon for the feed and uses it to devise a color. This isn’t very useful if you are colorblind, but it’s a sexy touch. It’s the little magical touches that make products interesting. These are the types of loving touches that I have come to expect from good Mac software.

That’s fucked up.

I hate the way Endo forces all groups into the toolbar. I want my groups to be in the main list.

Right now, I’m suffering with Vienna’s godawful metal UI. If it actually adopted Tiger’s unified look (and there are future plans to do so, and even preliminary patches available), it would be perfect.
