The Blog Is Dead, Long Live The Blog

Despite my lack of enthusiam for my own corner of the intarweb I still read many, many feeds. A small blurb surfaced a few weeks back that irked me and that I wanted to say something about. I forget where I read it, but Tim Bray contributed to a snazzy little idea that ‘Web 2.0′ was like ‘chmod 777 web’. This idea was picked up in a few places and spoken about.

The mere suggestion of 777′ing something like that should make the hair on the back of your neck stand up if you know what it means. If such a silly idea were true, someone would have already deleted the whole damned thing.

Use 775 if you are going to say silly things like that. 777 is a cute idea for the psuedo-admins created by mediatemple hosting plans but it’s scary for people that do system administration stuff for a living.

This is not aimed at Mr. Bray, of course. I know he gets what it means, I’m just being a picky asshole.
